Rental Vouchers

Toward affordable housing for all

May 13, 2006

YOUR May 10 editorial, "Rent money," got it right: There are literally tens of thousands of Massachusetts residents who are struggling to afford housing.

In addition to the many working families you cited, there are at least as many individuals living with significant disabilities who need rental assistance.

In Boston alone, more than half of the wait list for the rental voucher program is made up of people with disabilities ranging from mobility impairments to mental health concerns to medical challenges and everything in between.

Representative Carl Sciortino's efforts to increase funding for this important program deserve praise.

It speaks volumes that more than 50 members of the House have recognized the need to take direct and immediate action to address our state's affordable-housing crisis.

Massachusetts will never reach its full potential unless all of our residents can afford a place to live.
